The Museum
Perth & Kinross Council Museums & Galleries Service operate Perth Museum & Art Gallery, the Fergusson Gallery and Alyth Museum. Perth Museum & Art Gallery is one of the oldest museums in the UK with more than half a million objects. Their Collections have been officially designated a Recognised Collection of National Significance to Scotland. They cover History, Natural History and Art and include local and foreign material.

Perth & Kinross Council Museums & Galleries Service are currently developing new long-term displays which explore the artistic, social and natural history of Perth & Kinross. An innovative programme of exhibitions is attracting new audiences of all age groups, supported and enhanced by a focused programme of activities and events scheduled throughout the year.

The Role
The focus of the traineeship will be to offer a wide range of learning opportunities in collections access, public engagement and customer care. Learning will be delivered through a variety of practical, hands-on experiences as well as work shadowing and networking opportunities.

Key activities in the workplace will include:
• Collections research and documentation
• Care of collections, preparation and interpretation for exhibitions
• Involvement in events and exhibition installation
• Marketing and audience engagement

All of these tasks will be undertaken whilst gaining a wider knowledge and understanding of the museum sector.

The Details
The trainee will be based at Perth Museum & Art Gallery where staffing includes a curatorial team of collections officers, cultural projects staff responsible for developing and delivering a programme of public engagement, and a team of visitor services staff. There will be frequent opportunities for the trainee to work with across all the teams, with a range of staff, on a diverse range of exciting new projects and developments.

The trainee will be in daily informal contact with their supervisor and there will be a more formal monthly one to one meeting to monitor progress. Working with a variety of staff the trainee will accession, catalogue, research and care for discrete parts of the museum’s collection and create their own small exhibitions within the museum and local community campuses. They will also assist with larger planned exhibitions and events. These learning experiences will be supported by direct one-to-one coaching or training sessions with relevant staff in areas that support this work programme and the SVQ modules. The trainee will be encouraged to undertake e-learning and attend internal courses that are compulsory for all staff members, on topics including health & safety, risk assessment, child protection and equality and diversity.

The trainee will be encouraged to attend meetings of Tayside Museum Forum to meet other staff and volunteers from local university, independent and local authority museums and to learn from the range and variety of different museums in the region.

Some weekend and evening work will be required to cover events outwith normal office hours.

The Modules

As part of the SVQ Level 3 in Museums Practice all traineeships will cover mandatory units in background and workplace skills which will focus on:

• CCSCCS33: Planning and implementing your professional development in the creative and cultural industries
• CCSCV9: Cataloguing objects and collections within a cultural venue
• CCSCV15: Contributing to the care of items within a cultural venue

Within the Collections Traineeship with Perth Museum & Art Gallery you will also have the opportunity to complete 4 of the following modules: (Trainees must complete 2 from their chosen stream plus an additional 2 from any other stream or optional modules)
