Economic Researcher with East Renfrewshire Council

East Renfrewshire Council has a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic graduate intern to work in an economic development environment in a public-private sector partnership.

Location: Glasgow

£7.50 per hour, full-time (35 hours per week, Monday to Friday) for 6 months, with possible extension to 12 months.
Ideal start date 13 October 2014.

This post will be based in the East Renfrewshire Council offices, but the successful candidate’s time will be split between supporting the work of the Economic Development and Regeneration Department and Glasgow based private consultancy firm “Smart Consultancy.”

The successful candidate will be involved in a variety of tasks across both organisations and be required to lead in specific research tasks as directed. Key tasks are likely to include:

  • Undertake both primary and secondary research and analysis 
  • Inform Economic Intelligence, Policy and Strategy Development 
  • Compile a monthly Economic Monitor
  • Assist with the development of local and potentially national level input to various employability network activities

There is potential for wider scope of work depending on individual strengths, skills and experience.


This position would suit a recent graduate with experience or qualifications in Economics, Statistics or Business Analysis. The ideal candidate will have experience of conducting primary research including designing surveys, interviewing people and analysing data.

You should be able to demonstrate IT literacy with experience in using Excel for data analysis and scenario planning and have a good working knowledge of social media tools. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are essential for this position.
