Job hunting experience – Before starting my role at Scottish Council on Deafness, I was studying for my Masters in International Relations part-time alongside job hunting – a tricky balancing act and job-hunting was so time-consuming.

Roles and responsibilities – My internship work with the Deaf Sector Partnership involved research such as mapping Deaf Services by Local Authority Area, social media development on Twitter and building a website for the Deaf Sector Partnership. Alongside maintaining social media and writing news bulletins, my role also involved attending meetings within the Third Sector and with the Scottish Government, such as the Cross Party Group on Deafness.

Being deaf myself, I am particularly passionate about ensuring the Deaf community who use British Sign Language in Scotland achieve greater linguistic access to services such as education, healthcare and the justice system. By extension, this should help reduce inequalities across the societal spectrum from education, employment and income inequalities and ensure that the Deaf community have greater access to opportunities.

Where are you now? – My current role with Scottish Council on Deafness and the Deaf Sector Partnership is until June 2017. It is allowing me to build experience working within the Scottish Third Sector and suits my long-term career aims of working within the human rights sector. I am particularly interested in civil justice, promoting greater equality and access to opportunity amongst minority groups and addressing societal inequality.
