Job hunting experience – About a year after graduating, I was delighted to be offered my first internship with Golspie Golf Club as Marketing Development Project Manager, after struggling to find graduate-level employment. I then went on to do my final [Adopt an Intern] internship with Isle of Auskerry, Orkney where I spent another three months assisting the owner in a wide range of tasks.

Roles and responsibilities – There was a real mixture of responsibilities at Isle of Auskerry. However, the main task was to oversee the installation of new accounting software which was something I had very little experience in doing but turned out to be a real learning experience for both myself and Teresa, my boss!

I was also involved in increasing customer engagement with the company Facebook page and also assisting in the redesign of the company website. This involved going out into the beautiful Orcadian landscape doing mini product photo shoots! Unfortunately for reasons outwith our control, the website redesign had to be put on hold.

Where are you now? – In the summer of 2015, after finishing at Isle of Auskerry I applied for a year long graduate Marketing and ICT placement with a company in the village I grew up in. I was delighted to be offered the job at North Lands Creative Glass. I am responsible for updating the company website and social media channels, marketing our programme of master classes, skills classes and conference. This year, North Lands celebrates 20 years of experimenting with glass and connecting with the world from a remote Scottish village.

I would have loved to have been able to stay on at any of the organisations I did through Adopt an Intern but they were all just too small and couldn’t afford to keep me on at graduate level salary. However, I firmly believe that I would still be in the job I had when I was studying if I did not take the chance I did when I applied for my first internship. Even if the company cannot keep you once your internship has finished, the experience offered is beyond valuable!
