niversity – University of Edinburgh
Qualification – MSc Creative Writing
Job hunting experience – Trying to find a full-time job after working part-time as a bookseller was difficult. I found it especially hard to find something that allowed me to use and build on existing skills while also providing some flexibility.
Role and Responsibilities – With input and a lot of patience from my internship host Melanie Muir, I researched options for her new website and built up the skills to implement what I had found. I ended up building and editing her new website, as well as working on customer engagement. I was also lucky enough to get to visit Melanie in her home and studio in Nairn and accompany her to her exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland, which gave me great insight into her practice as a jewellery maker.
Where are you now? – I am now Project Manager at Scottish PEN (0.6 FTE) and Engagement Assistant at The University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (0.3 FTE). I love being able to work at different organisations with different groups of people! My internship with Melanie Muir Jewellery Design has given me the perfect start into pursuing online engagement as part of my work, and her mentorship gave me the skills that I now use when coordinating a team of people. At Scottish PEN, we are now lucky enough to have an ‘Adopt an Intern’ intern of our very own! We are so glad to have her, and she has had a truly transformative effect on the organisation.
