University – University of Dundee

Job hunting experience
I found it incredibly demoralising! I wanted to work in policy and had my heart set on Government but the Scottish Government wasn’t hiring externally at that time. I applied for over 40 jobs which I kept track of on a sheet on A4 paper and would score each off these off on receiving a rejection email, which happened almost daily. I just couldn’t get my foot in the door with only my degree.

Role and Responsibilities
I supported the Director of CSPP in producing policy briefing papers, researching key policy areas and representing the organisation at party conferences. I lead on creating event briefings for press, updating CSPP’s website, coordinating the social media of the business creating and publishing news bulletins to spread the word about CSPP’s great work.

Where are you now?
I now work in Sydney, Australia for the NSW Treasury as a Senior Policy Analyst which is a dream come true. I spent a year of my University degree in Australia having completed a transatlantic exchange and I always wanted to return to work here. I’m delighted I get to do it whilst furthering my career in policy.

I don’t think eventually getting temporary work at the Scottish Government, which led to further opportunities in the public policy space, would have been possible without the internships I completed through AAI. Thank you again for all your help!
