Job hunting experience – After graduating from the University of Stirling in 2013, gaining a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in English Literature & History, I found it rather difficult initially to find a job or a graduate scheme that suited me. I had heard about Adopt an Intern in passing and applied for a couple of placements before I was eventually invited along to an interview with an e-commerce business based in Hamilton. Shortly after the interview I was offered the position.

Role and Responsibilities – My internship involved me assisting the managing director of the company, alongside an independent marketing consultant, in the development of a digital marketing strategy that would bring in new clients and further interest in the company.

I also took a role co-ordinating the company’s social-media output across multiple platforms, wrote various blogs for the company website and was responsible for undertaking the hiring of an apprentice web-developer all the way through to the interview stage.

Where are you now? – Midway through 2015 I began another graduate intern role with Renfrewshire Council working alongside the Education and Economic Development departments. In my position as a job facilitator I was responsible for organising work-placements for young people furthest from the job market who were in care or from rather disadvantaged backgrounds. My role also allowed me to build partnerships with local businesses, companies and third-sector organisations and raise awareness of the Scottish Government/Education Scotland’s ‘Developing the Young Workforce’ initiative, as well as various vocational training, volunteering and apprenticeship opportunities.

In my current position working for Renfrewshire Council’s Children’s Services, I engage with primary school children who have a range of complex behavioural and emotional issues. My role requires me to encourage their learning and development in a classroom setting, as well as with their peers, teachers and even family members. Recently I have also been seconded to Paisley Grammar School to help support several Syrian refugees of high school age during their English language lessons.

Although all of these roles have provided me with really valuable experience and skills which will benefit me in my future career, I’m keen to develop my career in a different field, particularly in local government, human-resources, the media, marketing and communications sectors or public-relations.
