Job hunting experience
I was very lucky in that I had always found it fairly easy to find part-time work in hospitality and promotional jobs while studying at University. I didn’t start the real graduate job hunt until after my final university exams had finished as I wanted to focus all my energy there. When I started I sent off a few initial applications to larger corporate organisations and did progress to the next stage with a few, but my heart wasn’t really in it.
I then found Adopt an Intern and everything moved so fast, from sending an application, to my first day with Lifelink the whole process took less than three weeks! I started my role with Lifelink 3 weeks after actually graduating and have never looked back!
Role and Responsibilities
My role as an intern was extremely varied, I was quickly given a lot of responsibility and took on the organisational’s branding redesign project which had just started prior to my arrival. Throughout my first few months, I redesigned the website and got this up and running, worked closely with a design company to confirm our new logos and marketing materials and set up and managed social media channels for the organisation which hadn’t existed up until this point.
I spent a lot of time familiarising myself with how the organisation worked, Lifelink are a social enterprise who deliver one to one counselling, mentoring, group work and training to individuals and organisations across Glasgow – so there was a lot to learn! Within a few months of my arrival I assisted the chief exec in writing tenders for our main contracts through NHS and Glasgow City Council, took on a liaison support role with our IT company and assisted the management team with a huge variety of tasks they were working on.
Where are you now?
When my contract came to an end in March 2016 this was renewed and I have now secured full-time permanent employment with Lifelink. I was promoted in October 2016 to the role Training and Enterprise Officer and now work within the training and group work team.
I’ve been extremely lucky to have such a supportive employer who has offered me lots of training and different opportunities to get out and attend different events. I now coordinate the organisation’s training and deliver stress management and relaxation courses for adults and high schools in Glasgow.
I love my current role and am very happy to be in an organisation which is relevant to my degree and full of brilliant people, thank you!
