Digital Skills Trainee with Glencoe Folk Museum

The Museum
Glencoe Folk Museum is a small independent museum in the Highland region. It houses historical records, photographs and artefacts relating to the Glencoe, Ballachulish, Kinlochleven and North Lorn area.

This rural area is renowned for its natural beauty and is within the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’. There are many opportunities to participate in outdoor and adventure activities and a wide range of leisure interests can be followed within local groups. Transport links are good with city facilities in Glasgow and Inverness two hours away.

Glencoe Folk Museum’s purpose is to collect, preserve and exhibit the collections relevant to the history and social conditions of the area, for the purposes of education and interest to as wide an audience as possible. The museum has just gone through a period of redevelopment and is on a journey to continue improving the visitor experience through collections interpretation and improving visitor facilities.

The Role
The museum sets out to display the history of the area for the benefit of all visitors. It intends to attract more visitors by holding events, participating in outreach and connecting with communities both local and further afield. However, collections care, documentation and conservation at the core work that the museum carries out, and the traineeship will feed directly in to that.

As well as working with the collections to improve digital content, by the very nature of the museum the trainee will feed in to all other aspects of museum management, including improving displays and interpretation, learning, volunteer management, working front of house and managing events.

The traineeship is intended to allow the museum to improve its digital offering – in terms of improving quality, accessibility, volume and type of content. It is envisaged that the trainee will leave a legacy of a more inclusive culture.

The Details
The trainee will be based at the Museum building in Glencoe village, and the stores in Ballachulish. The trainee would fulfill a role akin to a Collections Assistant, working under the Curator. Their role would be to assist the Curator with all aspects of collections work (in the widest sense) within the museum, as well as feeding in to learning and volunteer management of the museum.

The curator will work with the trainee on a day-to-day basis. The traineeship will start in the closed season allowing time for induction and familiarisation of trainee role, requirements of the traineeship etc. For the most part, learning at the Museum is informal and revolves around learning on the job. The trainee will be involved in both identifying targets and working to achieve them.

Some weekend and evening work will be required to cover events outwith normal office hours.

The Modules

As part of the SVQ Level 3 in Museums Practice all traineeships will cover mandatory units in background and workplace skills which will focus on:
• CCSCCS30: Understanding the sector in which you work and the wider creative and cultural context
• CCSCCS32: Taking responsibility for your work in a creative and cultural organisation and self-evaluation
• CCSCCS33: Planning and implementing your professional development in the creative and cultural industries
• CCSCV9: Cataloguing objects and collections within a cultural venue
• CCSCV15: Contributing to the care of items within a cultural venue

Within the Digital Skills Traineeship with Glencoe Folk Museum you will also have the opportunity to complete 4 of the following modules: (Trainees must complete 2 from their chosen stream plus an additional 2 from any other stream or optional modules)

Interviews will take place at the hosting organisations during the week of 10-17 December, 2014.
